Watercraft Insurance
What is watercraft insurance?
Effectively, watercraft insurance is like car insurance. Like car insurance, something like personal liability coverage provides coverage to other boaters and boat owners in the event you are at-fault for an accident on the water. This coverage will pay to repair or replace the property of someone else as well as for their medical care, lost wages and other costs incurred as a result of a boating accident for which you are at-fault.
Do you have to have it?
Some places require it, but not usually. Since boat coverage is not always mandatory, many boaters choose not to get insurance. If it isn't required, why get it? If you are hit by an uninsured or underinsured boater, and you are injured, your watercraft insurance can, with the right coverage, pay for medical treatment, lost wages, and other costs associated with the accident.
So it protects my boat, what else?
Aside from some medical costs, it can also protect items that are in the boat. Your policy can provide coverage for many personal effects, including clothing, cell phones, scuba/snorkeling and other sporting equipment, and fishing equipment. Limits vary by state – check with Allegiance for information. Personal effects coverage does not include jewelry, watches or furs. If you have some of those which you would like to be protected, explore Valuable Item insurance.
What about emergencies?
Yes, watercraft insurance can help emergency services. The Emergency Assistance Package provides coverage for towing, labor and delivery of gas, oil or loaned battery if the watercraft is disabled while on the water.
What if I keep my boat in a different state?
If the state you keep your boat in and the state you have permanent residence in are different, just let us know. What you pay and certain aspects of coverage are dependent on state laws.
